I've been using Filezilla w/ normal FTP with no problems, but thought for security reasons I should switch to SFTP. Is there anything special I need to do (change the port number, maybe?) to do that? Right now when I try to connect with SFTP, it times out.

I need to change my ftp password as soon as possible. I logged into Plesk, changed the password, and while it was succesful for Plesk, it didn't change the ftp password. FTP still uses my old password. How can I change my ftp password? Thanks.

I tried to log into my site's control panel but got a message that the security certificate was not valid and opening the site was not recommended.

Ignore the error message and click through. Your security certificate is a shared certificate so you will see this message. It does not mean the connection is not secure, it just means that the address on the certificate does not match your site address. Which will be the case, as an SSL certificate for your domain might cost $100 or so...

So just click through the messages and you will get to the control panel. And yes, you can change the FTP password in the Plesk control panel.

So does something need to be done with the security certificate?
And can I change the ftp password once I do get to the control panel?

A customer wrote to us tonight:

My question to you is how on earth do I access my FTP? I want to change my theme, but I have tried different topics about wordpress and none of them have helped

No problem. First, you would the username and password from the email we sent called "Hosting Order Status" (not your WordPress admin login!!!) and connect to your domain name (if your domain is example.com then configure your FTP client to connect to http://www.example.com) and you should be able view your file system with FTP.

Never used FTP? You will need an FTP software like SmartFTP (see http://www.smartftp.com). See this video tutorial on configuring SmartFTP, or these tutorials on configuring WS_FTP, CuteFTP, or FileZilla.

Once you have been able to login in to your site via ftp, you'll probably see a set of directories that look like this:

anon_ftp

blog

cgi-bin

conf

error_docs

etc

httpdocs

httpsdocs

pd

private

statistics

subdomains

web_users

Open httpdocs, then inside there you will see another directory called wordpress. Open that, and look for wp-content. Inside there you will see a few folders, the most important are themes and plugins.

These are where you would install your custom themes and plugins of course. We've installed some by default, don't bother trying to customize them because we maintain the pre-installed themes and plugins and will update them with the latest versions periodically, which will wipe out any changes you make to them.

But you can add your own themes and plugins:

I think it's probably best practice to update your theme files via FTP rather than via the web control panel, in which case you do not need to worry about changing permissions.

Of course, we need to make sure the FTP server doesn't keep resetting itself... ;-)

As the problem was solved I didn't come back till just now. Thanks for the reply. I did eventually figure out how to change permissions via Plesk. Main files I needed to access were/are the sidebar and occasionally things like the header, or for the theme I'm using now the license file. I'm trying to get into the habit of changing the permissions back to browse only once i've finished making adjustments!

For the second time in a few days I can't access my site via FTP. Nothing comes up. Had this problem when the site was first launched but then it was ok.

Yes, that was a problem on our server. For some reason, our FTP service seems to be resetting itself back to the default config. Sorry about that, I just took care of that.

So I went to Support to submit a ticket but my login and password did not work, on three or so tries.

Make sure you are using the login for our ordering system, the one you created when you ordered hosting. It's not the same password as your Plesk hosting control panel or your Wordpress account.

I'm trying to work via the Plesk control panel, but can't see there how I can change the permissions on a file.

Yes, doing that via FTP is best.

Just curious, what files do you need to change permissions on and why? I ask because so many plugins offer really bad advice when it comes to security and file permissions...

How do I determine/find which settings to enter into my FTP client so that I can upload files to my wordpress directory and what steps do I take to configure my FTP software correctly?

FTP software requires 3 items:

- the host you are connecting to

- your username

- your password

Of course the host you are connecting to is your blog URL. Use the "www" version and that will work in 99% of all cases. So if your blog domain is example.com, try connecting to http://www.example.com.

Your username and password are the same as the ones we sent to you when your hosting account was created. Look in your email for a message with the subject of "Hosting Order Status". Of course if you have already changed the password in your Plesk control panel, use your new password rather than the initial one we sent you.

If you have never used FTP to transfer files, you might want to peruse some of our video tutorials about ftp.

Your Wordpress files are located at the path:

/httpdocs/wordpress/

Plugins can be added into

/httpdocs/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/

New themes should be uploaded to
