Now I have installed three different plugins, one at a time. In each case, the plugin appeared under "currently active plugins." However, it didn't actually work, and the number on the upper right over the word plugins remained at 2. How might I fix this, and get a plugin to work?

I have clicked on the url (mydomain.com:4_digit_number) provided in my Hosting Order Status email for the website's control panel Plesk but no luck. I tried in both IE7 and Opera but in both cases receive a Network Error page returned. I am on a fast connection so don't believe it's a result of the connection timing out.

I don't know if Wordpress logs any errors, but the only thing you could have an error on are the Mail Server, Port, Login Name, or Password. Why don't you open a PressHarbor support ticket and submit your settings for those items so we can verify you got them right?

If you have questions about advanced customization of your Wordpress theme, rather than posting them here your best bet is to post them to the Wordpress forums where there are hundreds of thousands of readers, many of whom might have the knowledge you are looking for.

Hi. I'm trying out the plug-in Wassup. In order to finish configuring it, I have to rename a temp files folder and am stumped about how I do that. I think I need to do something the php.ini file. Can anyone give me a tip on how to rename the file?

The message from the plug-in follows....

Temporary files location folder

Current "Save path" directory for storing temporary files used to track visitor activity:

/var/lib/php/session

Use absolute directory paths only. This value is usually "/tmp".
System default for session.save_path="/var/lib/php/session" from php.ini or from web server configuration.
WARNING! Directory does not exist or is not writable. Please enter a different path above or change "session.save_path" in "php.ini" to point to a valid, writable folder.

Hi. I'm new to WP and am stumbling on how to edit my header to show limited links. Basically, what I want to do from the main page is to only show header links only for pages that have no parent pages. Then when I click into one of those main page links, then I want to show the children pages.

For example, for what I have uploaded to intuiosity.com so far, I only want to show About and Overview pages in the header link. However, if I publish other (children) pages, then they show up in the header links.

Any tips would be appreciated.

I ask because I'm seeing this discussed on site after site as a top problem. These are current sites and current copyright 2008 books.

It is not an issue with the version of Wordpress installed here at PressHarbor. Try it and you will see, remove the www from your website address and you will see you (and any search engine as well) will be properly redirected to the www version of your site. Also try removing the trailing slash, you will see you are properly redirected to the normalized URL, which is the version with the trailing slash.

I have heard in the meantime that the all in one seo pack plugin takes care of this duplication of content issue. I am hoping that is the case.

Again, this is not an issue on your site so if you are installing that plugin solely for the concerns you explained above, it is not necessary.

Are you asking because you read this on some site somewhere or are you asking because you see this as an actual problem on your live site? I don't see that this is actually an issue, perhaps you are reading some outdated web page somewhere which stated that this was an issue at some point in the past?

If you can demonstrate that this is really an issue, I would be glad to look into it. As far as I can see, this "normalization" of URLs was taken care of by Wordpress some time ago.

There is nothing you can do beyond going back to the original Blogware site and copying the information there and pasting it into the Wordpress control panel.

There aren't many, and I'd be ok with editing manually if I need to.

Yes, editing it manually from within the control panel is your only option.

I have decided to create these manually. Is there a way I can control the date? I would like to keep the original date in place. I don't see a way in the user interface.

It's in there in the control panel. When you edit a comment, you can scroll down to the Advanced area and you will see the Edit time area.

It is also not clear to me how I would even upload a folder into my blog - where is this feature located?

Please see this thread: http://support.pressharbor.com/discuss/topic/13?replies=1 to learn about how to ftp files and folders. You can find all of our FTP-related support docs at http://support.pressharbor.com/?s=ftp and forum posts at http://support.pressharbor.com/discuss/tags/ftp .

I am also a little confused as to why content is not editable - apparently in other WordPress formats one is able to change their "permissions" in order to edit content in their header

Yes, and in many others it is not possible to edit files via the control panel. The technical answer is "it depends on whether Apache runs as the user who owns the files or if it runs as a different user such as apache." Managing your Wordpress works differently from server to server, web servers vary widely, and what is safe or workable on one server is not safe or workable on another.

In Blogharbor there was a feature under security (in the general category) which allowed the user to add additional header information. Why can't that be available on Press Harbor?

Because it does not exist in Wordpress. We did not write Wordpress, we can only install it for you and manage its upgrades. Please take it up with their developers if you wish to see a feature added to it.

If you could direct me to clear, simple, step by step directions which explain ftp and how to do everything you wrote above, it would be helpful.

We have a number of places for you to learn about http://FTP. See our first reply above.

I am a little frustrated. I do not have a lot of computer knowledge and I don't even know what ftp is or how to find it, much less download a directory to it. It is also not clear to me how I would even upload a folder into my blog - where is this feature located?

I am also a little confused as to why content is not editable - apparently in other WordPress formats one is able to change their "permissions" in order to edit content in their header....without downloading, changing names, and then uploading new themes. For a "newbie" in code, this is so over my head as to be unreachable.

In Blogharbor there was a feature under security (in the general category) which allowed the user to add additional header information. Why can't that be available on Press Harbor? I have one small piece of code I need to add in order to make a feature on my blog functional...this just seems so unwieldy.

If you could direct me to clear, simple, step by step directions which explain ftp and how to do everything you wrote above, it would be helpful. Thanks.

I need to change my ftp password as soon as possible. I logged into Plesk, changed the password, and while it was succesful for Plesk, it didn't change the ftp password. FTP still uses my old password. How can I change my ftp password? Thanks.

Should you be editing it with something else? Yes. Since you are on a Mac, try downloading Textwrangler from http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/index.shtml . It's free, and the best of the free text editors.

We have three categories we don't have any for anymore containing about 500 posts. Is there a way to do a mass replace one category for another?

Thanks.

Also, our system maintains the pre-installed themes, so any changes you make to them would be overwritten anyway.

If you want to customize a pre-installed theme, download the directory to your local computer through ftp . Make your changes locally, then upload the entire directory -with a new name- to the themes folder.

So if you want to customize the default theme, download it to your local machine and rename the directory from default to my-default for example. Then make your custom changes, and upload the my-default directory to your themes directory.

For security reasons, we do not recommend setting permissions on files so that they can be edited through the control panel.

Edit your files locally on your computer, then upload them to the server via ftp .

Hi,

I am in the Theme Editor and I want to make changes to my header image. I am following instructions from http://www.revolutiontheme.com/using-a-full-width-header-image.htm. When I go to make changes to the code, at the bottom of the window is says "If this file were writable you could edit it."

How do I make it "writable" or what I am doing wrong?

Thanks.

And don't forget that Wordpress allows you to specify any Wordpress Page as your home paqe... And if that doesn't work for you, you can always create your own template called home.php and drop it into the theme directory and Wordpress will serve that up as your home page.
